The New Orleans Saints are officially entering a new era as they approach the summer. Following the appointment of former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as coach, the team will also introduce a new starting quarterback.

This year’s second-round pick, Tyler Shough, and 2024 fifth-round selection Spencer Rattler, are vying for the QB1 role following Derek Carr’s surprise retirement.

Many are curious about the status of the quarterback competition after OTA sessions. NFL insider Tom Pelissero declared on Saturday that Shough has a shot to start. However, he also mentioned that Rattler has “some really big fans” among the coaches.

“Tyler Shough certainly seems to be in line to be the starter in New Orleans. But Spencer Rattler has some really big fans,” Pelissero said on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “Not just from the people in the building now, but last year’s coaches and from the people in the league who have watched him.

“I’m really interested to see when it’s Shough vs. Rattler — what happens that is the line, along with Jake Haener, who’s currently sidelined. What’s it going to look like? How’re they going to divide the reps between those guys? Because Rattler played some, and he showed flashes. He also had some bad moments, but I’d not totally write off Spencer Rattler yet.”

Since the end of the Drew Brees era in 2020, the Saints have struggled to get stable and regular output from their quarterbacks. Attempts to replace Brees with Carr, Jameis Winston and other candidates failed.

Although there is a genuine competition between Shough and Rattler for the QB1 position, it will probably take more weeks before someone assumes the position.

Spencer Rattler has continued to impress at Saints’ OTAs

Spencer Rattler has shown more during OTAs than Tyler Shough, who could be the frontrunner to start for New Orleans.

Saints insider Ross Jackson claimed that Rattler has turned heads.

“Looked quick and decisive as he has been in all OTAs and showed a lot of patience and movement ability during 7-on-7s in the red zone,” Jackson said on May 23, via WLOX ABC’s Matt DeGregorio.

Based on his OTA performances, Rattler appears to be the most likely candidate to start. It will not be long before New Orleans coach Kellen Moore potentially selects him as the QB1 if he keeps playing well.

The Saints’ third-string quarterback this season will be Jake Haener, who also spent the most of the 2024 season behind Rattler.
