In a dramatic escalation of political rhetoric, former President Donald Trump has accused senior aides to President Joe Biden of committing “treason at the highest level” by allegedly exploiting Biden’s declining cognitive health to implement policies that, Trump claims, the president himself would never have authorized. The claims, made in a May 20 post on Trump’s Truth Social platform, reflect both a growing narrative within Trump’s 2024 campaign and a rising wave of public scrutiny surrounding Biden’s fitness for office.
According to Trump, Biden’s staffers have effectively “stolen” the presidency by seizing control of executive authority through misuse of the autopen-a mechanical device used to reproduce a person’s signature. Trump asserts that the device has become a tool for unelected aides to bypass the will of the American people and override Biden’s own views.
“The Joe Biden that everybody knew would never allow drug dealers, gang members, and the mentally insane to come into our Country totally unchecked and unvetted,” Trump wrote. “It wasn’t his idea to open the border… It was the people that knew he was cognitively impaired, and that took over the autopen.”
The former president went on to describe the alleged manipulation as “TREASON at the highest level,” suggesting that those responsible should face severe consequences. “Something very severe should happen to these treasonous thugs that wanted to destroy our Country,” Trump warned, “but couldn’t, because I came along.”
Trump’s explosive accusations come just days after the White House confirmed that President Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. The cancer is reportedly at stage 4, with a Gleason score of 9 and metastasis to the bone-an advanced condition that often indicates a prolonged and undetected progression of the disease.
While Trump offered public well-wishes to Biden, he also voiced suspicion about the timing of the disclosure, stating that such a diagnosis should have been known “a long time ago.” Speaking to reporters on May 19, Trump questioned how medical professionals at Walter Reed and the White House could have missed a cancer that typically takes years to develop.
“I’m surprised that… the public wasn’t notified a long time ago, because to get to stage nine, that’s a long time,” Trump said. “There are things going on that the public wasn’t informed of. And I think somebody’s gonna have to speak to his doctor.”
The cancer revelation has compounded existing concerns over Biden’s cognitive state, which have been a recurring subject of both media speculation and partisan attacks throughout his presidency. Critics have pointed to repeated verbal missteps, memory lapses, and moments of apparent confusion as signs of a deeper issue. Supporters, however, argue that the 81-year-old president is still mentally sharp and capable of fulfilling his duties.
Central to Trump’s accusation is the use of the autopen-an officially sanctioned tool that has been employed by presidents dating back to the 20th century to sign routine documents. The device is commonly used when the president is not physically present or when multiple documents require signing within a short time frame.
However, Trump contends that the autopen has been misappropriated by Biden’s aides to authorize executive actions without the president’s direct consent. He cited the administration’s immigration policies-particularly the perceived lack of border enforcement-as evidence of an agenda being driven not by Biden himself, but by ideological staffers using his name.
Earlier this year, Trump declared that some of Biden’s last-minute executive pardons were “void,” alleging they were signed by the autopen without the president’s explicit knowledge. Legal scholars maintain that documents signed via autopen are valid when properly authorized, but Trump’s broader claim hinges on whether that authorization genuinely came from Biden-or from staffers acting in his name.
In response to Trump’s assertions and rising concerns from within conservative circles, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer has opened a formal investigation into whether Biden’s top aides misled the public about his cognitive condition and misused the autopen to carry out policy decisions without his knowledge.
The committee is reportedly seeking internal communications from the White House regarding the president’s medical evaluations, as well as records pertaining to executive actions and their signatures. While no evidence has yet emerged publicly to support Trump’s claim of treason, Comer’s investigation underscores the growing political momentum behind the allegations.
A spokesperson for the Biden administration dismissed the accusations as “baseless conspiracy theories,” insisting that all executive actions are legally vetted and authorized. The White House medical team has not issued further updates on Biden’s health since the prostate cancer diagnosis was confirmed.
Trump’s intensifying attacks on Biden’s health and the legitimacy of his administration are widely viewed as a preview of his campaign strategy heading into the final stretch of the 2024 presidential race. By framing Biden as cognitively unfit and manipulated by ideological aides, Trump is attempting to undermine not only Biden’s policies but also his legitimacy as a leader.
The move is not without precedent; Trump has long used accusations of deep-state conspiracies and institutional overreach to galvanize his political base. In this instance, the narrative centers on the idea that the American presidency itself has been hijacked-not by foreign adversaries, but by domestic political operatives within the executive branch.
Whether or not these claims will resonate with independent voters remains uncertain. Polls continue to show that a significant portion of the electorate harbors doubts about Biden’s physical and mental stamina. At the same time, Trump’s hyperbolic framing and calls for severe punishment may alienate moderates wary of escalating political rhetoric.
Still, with both candidates likely heading toward a rematch in November, questions about health, transparency, and the boundaries of executive authority are poised to take center stage in one of the most consequential and volatile election campaigns in American history.
Trump’s accusations of treason against Biden’s aides mark a sharp turn in an already contentious political climate. By invoking national security language and questioning the legitimacy of presidential authority, the former president is laying the groundwork for a campaign defined by constitutional challenges, personal health concerns, and fundamental questions about who is truly governing the United States. As investigations proceed and public debate intensifies, the role of the autopen may become a surprisingly central symbol in the 2024 presidential narrative.
